KATHMANDU, Jan 14: The physical infrastructure ambulance put into operation by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City for the past six months has become useless.

KMC had started this ambulance from the first week of June to reduce traffic jams and road accidents. At the beginning of the operation, up to 15 complaints were received daily and resolved accordingly. KMC Physical Infrastructure Division Chief Ram Thapa informed Republica that now hardly a complaint is received every four to five days.

According to Thapa, now there are complaints about filling potholes in the road. That also comes from the concerned ward chairpersons. Citizens have stopped calling KMC's toll-free number to complain.

In the beginning, physical infrastructure ambulance was operated by repairing two vehicles of KMC’s Environment Department. It was difficult to get the two of them to work at the time. Now one of the two is broken. None of them have been able to find work. "Every four to five days there are complaints to do a job," said Thapa.

The ambulance was used to immediately address the complaints that came especially from within the area of KMC to repair potholes. According to Chief Thapa, there are fewer potholes on the roads compared to the rainy season, the road department is doing regular work in the places where it should be done, and because KMC is regularizing the road maintenance work within its jurisdiction, infrastructure ambulances are not getting work.

A team of three people, including engineers and laborers from the metropolis, reached the toll booths and continued to repair the roads. So far, many such works have been done in Dallu, New Baneshwar, Buddhanagar and Baluwatar areas. As there were problems with traffic management during the maintenance work on the road during the afternoon, KMC has started doing such work only in the morning and evening.

Similarly, KMC’s road sweeping machines (Broomer) is in regular operation to keep the road clean. At present, there are six mechanical culverts in operation in KMC, such as garbage management, regular use of brooms, water and sewerage, and management of trenches dug while managing electric wires are being done regularly.
