Keeping the tradition alive

Purna Maharjan, Arish Maharjan, Rabi Dangol, Prasan Maharjan, Sujan Maharjan and Prajal Maharjan are the members of Shree Kanga Ajima Yetkha Twa, Yetkha, Kathmandu. In this traditional musical band there are 10 members.

They belong to Newar community and from Maharjan clan and it’s their custom to learn to play traditional musical instruments such as Dhime and Kepu along with the handle Dhuniya -- a long bamboo stick -- that is moved as per the music.

It has been 11 years that these men are performing and every year they get to perform only around seven times in various occasions. Besides having skill as traditional musician these men are either students or employees at various organizations. They say that they do it to keep their tradition alive.
