KATHMANDU, May 17: Independent candidate Balen Shah is leading the mayoral race of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) by a margin of over 5,000 votes against his closest rival Keshav Sthapit of the CPN-UML.
In the ongoing vote counting, Shah has received 11,343 votes so far (2PM), while Sthapit is trailing behind with 6,258 votes. Similarly, Nepali Congress (NC) candidate Srijana Singh has received 5,408 votes so far.

Likewise, CPN-UML candidate Sunita Dangol is leading the polls in the contest for deputy-mayor of KMC. Dangol has received 9,419 votes in the ongoing vote counting while her closest rival Rameshwor Shrestha of CPN (Unified Socialist) has received 2,575 votes.
There are a total of 300,242 registered voters in KMC but only a little over half of them cast their votes in the May 13 local polls.
