Karnali pushes for pesticide-free farming

SURKHET, Sept 27: The provincial government is planning to establish laboratories at Harre of Surkhet district and Kapurkot of Salyan district to test the level of pesticides in agricultural products.

A meeting of the provincial government has allocated Rs 1.5 million for the labs. The Karnali Province is planning to establish labs in order to promote organic farming in the province.

“The labs are established to test the vegetables being imported from other districts,” said Bimala KC, minister for land management, agriculture and cooperative of the province. “The lab will be established during Dashain festival,” she added.

The provincial government has allocated a total of Rs 21.9 million in the current fiscal year aimed at promoting organic farming in the province.

The Karnali Province is planning to establish labs in order to promote organic farming in the province.

“Our aim is to discourage pesticides in farming in the Karnali Province. Labs are being established in major checkpoints of Karnali,” KC said, adding, “Other programs will also be introduced to promote organic farming.”

The ministry plans to develop model organic villages in Khatyad and Soru of Mugu district, Sanni Triveni of Kalikot, Sinja of Jumla district, Adanchuli and Tajakot of Humla district, Tripurasundari of Dolpa district, Bhagwatimai of Dailekh district, and Aathbiskot of Rukum district.

The provincial government is preparing a draft a new law to develop the region as an organic province. An expert team is working for this.
