KARNALI, Aug 2: The 2nd National Millet Day, 2083 has been observed under the theme of conservation of millet (kodo) for food security and nutrition.
During a programme organized by the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives of Karnali Province in Birendranagar on Saturday, speakers underlined the need for changing perspective towards millet. Various stakeholders attended the event which dwelt on significance of millet in the wake of rising food insecurity of late.
Millet has a medicinal value, they said, adding that varieties of millet should be identified and conserved so that it could help reduce poverty, according to Ministry secretary Sanjiv Kumar Karna. It must not be regarded as the food of poor, he added.

He argued, "Millet is a nutrition-rich corn, so it must be protected and promoted as a major crop. Even the perspective towards millet needs change."
The secretary was of the view that Karnali Province could be developed as a region of organic products where production and expansion of millet count much.
Agronomist at the ministry, Bimala Kumari Khanal, made a presentation on origin, production and consumption of millet and challenges of its cultivation. This native crop must be protected and commercial farming forwarded, she added.
Even an exhibition was held on the occasion where over 20 types of millet cuisines were served. Both traditional and modern food items made of millet like dhindo and cake were displayed.
Kamal Nepali, who has been doing organic farming in Karnali Province, shared that more than 24 varieties of foods could be prepared with millet. Once the commercialization of millet is done with the involvement of youths, it could not only create jobs to youths but also contribute to provincial economy, he added.
