Kargil runner wins 'Mount Everest Marathon Goodwill Prize'

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon has conferred the 'Mount Everest Marathon Goodwill Prize' on Namgyal Yangmo of Kargil – the winner of women's category in Half Marathon event of Kargil International Marathon.

Bikram Pandey KAAJI of Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon handed over the prize to the Kargil-based marathon runner at the closing ceremony of Kargil International Marathon in Kargil on September 2. The award carries a purse of IRs 8,848 which symbolizes the height of Mount Everest -- the tallest peak on earth.

"I am very happy to receive this award established in the name of Mount Everest. Such awards encourage athletes likes us," Yangmo added.

Speaking on the occasion, Bikram Pandey KAAJI said they have started distributing 'Mount Everest Marathon Goodwill Prize' to promote Nepal and Mount Everest far and wide. "This prize will get continuity in Kargil International Marathon in the coming years as well. We have already been distributing this prize in Kanchanjunga International Marathon which is held in Sikkim state of India," he said, adding that gradually the award will be distributed in other marathons organized in the Himalayas. This is a novel away of promoting Nepal and Nepal's tourism attractions, he added.

Over 1,500 athletes participated in the marathon.
