Helicopter crash-lands at Kathmandu-based Grande Int’l Hospital

A Simrik Air helicopter crash-landed on the helipad of Grande International Hospital in Dhapasi on Saturday afternoon.  The helicopter had reached the hospital to transport a doctor and a nurse to Chitwan. Captain Hari Ram Thapa has sustained minor injuries to his left hand while the helicopter sustained minor damage.  

Police arrest Dr. KC before protesting in 'prohibited zone'

Dr. Govinda KC, who had flown to Jumla to protest in front of District Administration Office against the alterations with the Medical Education Ordinance Replacement Bill has been kept in custody by the police. In light of KC’s protest, the DAO had issued a public notice banning any kind of strike including hunger strike, agitation and demonstration within 200 meters of the DAO, the district police office and the Karnali Institute of Health Sciences (KIHS) today. Likewise, senior leaders of Bibeksheel Sajha Party were also kept in custody for protesting at Maitighar Mandala, a prohibited zone in Kathmandu.

Two arrested while smuggling 3kg of gold

Dipak Kumare More and Manoj BK were arrested from Nagdhunga while smuggling three kilogram of illegal gold. The duo, an Indian and a Nepali were arrested with the smuggled gold stuffed inside the air filter of their vehicle with number plate UK 02 4684. 

Air pollution – a neglected cause of death

Around 4.5 million people died prematurely from diseases attributed to ambient air pollution, including 237,000 children under the age of five from respiratory infections in 2015, according to a study published by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. According to the World Health Organization, around one million children younger than five years died from lower respiratory infections in 2015. Fine particulates smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) play a decisive role as they penetrate deeply into the respiratory tract, and as a result can increase the risks of  respiratory infections, ischaemic heart disease (heart attacks), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cerebrovascular disease (strokes) and lung cancer.

Juhi Chawla scorns Kathmandu’s pollution

Indian actress, Juhi Chawla, who’s in a family visit in Kathmandu scorned Kathmandu’s dust on Twitter. “While waiting for our cars,in Kathmandu ...so much dust,so much traffic, so much diesel and petrol fume in the air,that we had to cover our faces , everyday here locals walk around with surgical masks,” the celebrated actress posted.
