Journalists will be given priority in COVID-19 vaccination campaign: Minister Gurung

KATHMANDU, May 24: The Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Parbat Gurung has announced to prioritize journalists to administer vaccines against COVID-19. 

Earlier, the President of Federation of Nepal Journalist (FNJ), Bagmati Province Chapter, Bal Krishna Adhikari had informed Gurung that some 600 journalists affiliated with the provincial committee had not received any vaccines.

Minister Gurung assured journalists of making necessary arrangements to prioritize journalists in COVID-19 vaccination programs. According to General Secretary of FNJ Ram Kumar Shahi, Minister Gurung stated that he is aware of the problems faced by journalists and that he will leave no stones unturned to address issues raised by the federation. 

According to Adhikari, the provincial committee has also requested Minister Gurung to provide financial assistance and employment opportunities to the families of Shanti Ram Karki, President of FNJ Chapter in Channel Nepal and Krishna Prasad Ojha, a journalist working with Radio Nepal. They have passed away due to COVID-19. 

The FNJ Provincial Committee has requested the government to come up with different relief packages to address the problems faced by media houses and journalists. 

The FNJ provincial committee has also demanded the government to facilitate the distribution of press passes from the Department of Information and Broadcasting, provide health insurances for the members of FNJ and provide journalists with financial assistance for the treatment of diseases like cancer and kidney.
