Jeet Kune Do begins Thursday<br/>Badminton team to leave for Lanka

KATHMANDU, July 28: The first edition of the National Hero Amar Singh Thapa Memorial Cup Jeet Kune Do Martial Arts Championship will be held on Thursday and Friday at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium. [break]



Altogether 160 players from across the nation will participate in the championship to be held as two different events--combat fight and official fight, informed joint organizers Nepal Martial Arts Association and National Hero Amar Singh Thapa Foundation at a press meet organized Tuesday.



The players will vie for eight gold, eight silver and 16 bronze medals. The top three players in both men´s and women´s combat fights will bag cash prizes of Rs 10,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively. In this category, only U-22 players will compete with each other, and there is no weight bar.



The best man and woman player of the championship will be given scholarships for a year, announced the organizers.





Badminton team to leave for Lanka



KATHMANDU, July 28: An eight-member badminton team is leaving for Colombo, Sri Lanka on Wednesday to participate in the U-16 Asian Youth Badminton Championship to be held from August 3-9 in Colombo.



Players including Bilal Waris, Mohammad Irfan Ansari, Anup Gurung and Deepak Dhami will represent Nepal in the tournament. The players during their maiden international tournament will compete in singles, doubles and team event. Megraj Kathayat is the team coach while Anup Basnet and Krishna Sundar Bista are the team leader and manager respectively. Altogether 30 nations will be competing in the tournament.



The players were selected after holding the league match at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium, stated Ranjit Bahadur Shrestha, general secretary of the Nepal Badminton Association at a press meet in the capital on Tuesday. “The selected players have been undergoing training from last two weeks,” he added. Meanwhile, Prakash Bahadur Shah, president, NBA, and other office holders bade the players a farewell and wished for their good performance.





Karki in badminton circle



KATHMANDU, July28: Bharat Bahadur Karki has been elected as the President of the Jawalakhel Youth Club´s Badminton Circle on Tuesday. General assembly of the club elected Karki as the leader of the circle.



Kirojman Singh Basnet, Pradip Thapa and Awadhesh Chandra Jha were elected as Vice-President, while Binod Kaji Shrestha and Abhimanyu KC were elected Treasurer and Secretary respectively. Meanwhile, Sangeet Rana, Parashar Jung Pandey, Ramchandra Basnet, Kapil Shahi and Manmohan KC were elected as the member by the general assembly. Former President YB Ghale was elected as the honorary President of the circle.
