KATHMANDU, Dec 21: Minister for Home Affairs, Bal Krishna Khand has said that it is the government’s duty to take the steps needed to pass the US-funded Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact agreement through parliament.

Talking to media persons in Janakpur on Tuesday, Home Minister Khand said that the MCC compact agreement was initiated by the former governments and that it is the duty of the present government to move ahead with the agreement. He also maintained that the MCC agreement was brought forth for the country’s development.

Minister Khand also clarified that MCC is a grant assistance and not a debt trap. He said that the MCC was introduced to the country to develop its electricity infrastructures and roadways by the US government upon the request of the Nepal government.

“There might be some misunderstandings regarding MCC. The US government has been providing such grants to alleviate poverty and improve employment opportunities. The Nepal government had requested the US government for support to construct physical infrastructures needed to expand the country’s transmission lines and roads, which they accepted. MCC is not a debt trap but a grant. Talks are being held among the political parties to reach consensus on the issue and move ahead,” Minister Khand said.
