KATHMANDU, June 21: The International Day of Yoga is being observed across the world, highlighting its importance for life-long health and well-being of the people.

Issuing a statement on the International Day of Yoga, WHO has urged one and all to harness the full potential of traditional knowledge systems.

“Across the South-East Asia Region, WHO is promoting the safe and effective use of traditional medicine by regulating, researching and, where appropriate, integrating it into national health systems,” reads the statement issued by WHO.

Yoga is not only useful for students for excelling in their study but also adults and those aged 65 or above for reducing the risk of depression and maintaining cognitive functioning.

Yoga is practiced at all ages. The only requirement is a commitment to better health and a willingness to gently stretch, exercise and invigorate one’s body and mind.

The International Day of Yoga, draws a critical link between healthy lifestyles, physical activity and individual and public health. Non Communicable Diseases cause an estimated 8.5 million deaths in the region every year.

There has been a report that around 70% of boys and 80% of girls in the region do not involve in physical activity.

Meanwhile, WHO recommends schools to include Yoga in their curriculum for physical, mental and spiritual development of students.

Across the South-East Asia Region, WHO said that it is promoting safe and effective use of traditional medicine by regulating, researching and, where appropriate, integrating it into national health systems.

The UN body has said that we can establish the individual and social habits that catalyze real change by encouraging positive health care experiences, and by embracing the principle of preventive health.

The 5000-year-old practice of yoga is considered an effective way to increase strength and flexibility, enhance cardio-fitness, burn calories and relax the mind.
