Kathmandu, Oct 2: The 8th International Day of Non-Violence is being observed amid various programme.

The day that falls on October 2 has been declared unanimously by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2007, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. 

The day is being celebrated against terrorism and violence since 2008 following the declaration by 193 UN member countries across the globe. 

A Gandhi's statue has been built by the United Kingdom before its parliament square in reorganization of the Gandhi's inspiration against violence. "The life-course of Gandhi has inspired the world for adopting non-violence approach," said Nepal's former permanent representative for the UN Dr Jayaraj Acharya.

Meanwhile on the occasion, the Centre for Democracy and Development and Takshashila Academy jointly held a recitation programme in Samakhusi on Saturday.

Likewise, the Human Rights and Peace Society also held a programme to light lamps at Boudha Stupa in the Capital at 5 pm today to mark the day. RSS
