How Trump won
Donald Trump has been voted the 45th President of the United States. The Republican nominee’s triumph came down to a handful of key swing states. Until shortly before the polls opened on Tuesday most observers had predicted Trump’s rival Hillary Clinton would win.

The battleground states of Florida, Ohio and North Carolina all fell to Mr. Trump. In the last presidential election 2012, current President Barack Obama had won in Ohio, but also lost North Carolina and Florida.

This chart shows the preliminary results for the United States presidential election Nov. 8, 2016

What the final polls said
The infographic below pulls together a selection of the final polls, showing that in the vast majority of cases, Clinton is expected to triumph. However, given the general unpredictability of this extraordinary election and its Republican candidate, Democrats are far from bullish when it comes to their chances.

Looking to the past, there is also plenty of reason to show restraint—in 2012, the final poll from Gallup had Romney leading Obama by one point.
