A powerful earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Lombok, killing over 90 people and and prompting an exodus of tourists rattled by the second powerful quake in a week. National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the death toll had risen to 91 and more than 200 people were seriously injured. Thousands of homes and buildings were damaged and 20,000 people are in temporary shelters.

The quake, measured at a magnitude 6.9 by the U.S. Geological Survey, struck early Sunday evening at a depth of 10.5 kilometers in the northern part of Lombok. It was the second deadly quake in a week to hit Lombok. on July 29, a 6.4 magnitude tremor killed 17 people, injured hundreds and briefly stranded several hundred trekkers on the slopes of a volcano. About 1,000 foreign and domestic tourists were evacuated in boats from the three Gili islands off the northwest coast of Lombok.
