KATHMANDU, June 13: The government has now officially allowed Indian tourists traveling to Nepal via land routes to bring up to USD 5,000 worth of currency in line with the announcement made in the budget speech on March 29.
According to a notice published in the Nepal Gazette on Friday, Indian nationals visiting Nepal by air or land can now carry traveler's cheques equivalent to USD 5,000.

Previously, Indian tourists were only allowed to bring up to INR 25,000. Tourists from other countries, however, were permitted to bring up to USD 5,000. If travelers wish to carry more than the specified amount, they are required to declare it at the customs point. The new provision does not apply to Nepali citizens returning from abroad; the existing rules for them remain unchanged.
Similarly, a new provision has been introduced allowing travelers coming from India for social events such as weddings to bring jewelry for personal use, provided it is declared at the customs office and taken back upon return.
Nepali citizens returning from abroad are exempt from customs duties on personal clothing, household items, and medicines. Used items such as one unit each of a tablet, laptop or desktop, watch, camera, video camera, and mobile phone can be brought without any duty. However, duties must be paid on new items.
Nepali citizens who have worked abroad for at least six consecutive months with labor approval are allowed to bring one set of new mobile phones with them.
The notice also outlines the rules for bringing gold under the Customs Duty Act, 2081. It states that up to 50 grams of gold and gold jewelry can be brought in by paying the prevailing duty. An additional 50 grams can be brought in by paying the regular duty plus an extra 3 percent customs charge.
