KATHMANDU, Jan 16: The international community has conveyed grief over the tragic plane crash involving Yeti Airlines aircraft that claimed the life of at least 68 people in Pokhara on Sunday morning.


Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences over the death of people in the tragic air crash in Pokhara. He said that he is pained by the tragic air crash in Nepal in which precious lives have been lost, including Indian nationals. “In this hour of grief, my thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families,” he wrote on his twitter.


Russian President Vladimir Putin also conveyed his condolences over the deaths of people in the fatal air crash, as did Pakistani President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.


Pakistani President Alvi conveyed his prayers for the families of the victims, who lost their lives in the tragic incident and prayed to Allah Almighty to grant them the strength and the courage to bear this loss with patience and fortitude. 


Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said, “In this difficult and sad time, our sympathies and prayers are with the Government of Nepal, the affected families and the people of Nepal. May Allah grant the bereaved the courage to endure this trauma with patience and perseverance.”

The envoys from US, China and Australia are also among those expressing their grief over the plane crash in Pokhara. The US Embassy in Nepal expressed its condolences to the victims’ family through social media, noting that the tragic accident was extremely sad. 


Chinese Ambassador Chen Song also tweeted that he was very shocked by the plane crash and said that he is with the Nepali people in this sad time. He expressed his condolences to the bereaved family while paying tribute to the plane crash victims.


Australian Ambassador to Nepal Felicity Volk said they are devastated by the tragic Yeti Airlines crash in Pokhara on Sunday morning. “We are working with authorities regarding the one Australian reported to be on the flight. Our hearts go out to all victims and their families,” she tweeted.


UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal Hanna Singer Hamdy also extended her deep sympathies and condolences to those who lost their life in the plane crash. “On behalf of myself, the SG & the UN staff, I’d like to extend my deep sympathies & condolences to Nepalese and foreign nationals on board the Yeti Airlines flight. What a terrible human loss. In these extremely difficult times, may God ease the pain of the families of the victims,” she tweeted.


On Sunday morning, an ATR-72 aircraft of Yeti Airlines, which took off from the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu for Pokhara, met with an accident on the bank of Seti River between the old airport and the new airport. Among the 72 people onboard the aircraft, 68 dead bodies have already been recovered as of 9 am Monday. The search for the remaining four persons missing is currently underway.


The ill-fated aircraft had a total 15 foreign nationals including five Indians, four Russians, two South Koreans and one each from Australia, Ireland, France and Argentina onboard.
