RAJKOT, India, Nov 11:  Cheteshwar Pujara was one short of his century and Murali Vijay was 86 not out as India reached 228-1 at tea Friday, cutting England's first-innings lead to 309 runs on day three of the series-opening cricket test.

Pujara and Vijay have added 160 runs for the second wicket, coming together when Gautam Gambir was adjudged lbw to Stuart Broad in the second over of the day.

The scoring rate dipped in this second session, with only 66 runs came off 29 overs. The England bowlers worked hard and were disciplined, with Chris Woakes (0-31) the standout among them.

Both batsmen had chances in the post-lunch session. Vijay scooped one off Broad (1-32) in the 60th over but Haseeb Hameed dropped the sharp chance at short cover.

Pujara was on 86 when he was adjudged lbw to Zafar Ansari in the 71st over, or so he thought, but the on-field umpire's decision was overturned after India referred it to the DRS.
