Ilam district sees rise on the cases of rape in past four years

90 rape cases recorded in past four years 

KATHMANDU, Dec 25: Ilam district has witnessed a sharp rise in the cases of rape in the past four years.

The district has recorded as many as 90 rape cases in past four years. (2017-2020), according to the Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC).

A total of 32 rape cases in 2017, while the number of rape cases in 2018 stood at 23. The district recorded 21 rape case in 2019 and 14 in the year 2020. Similarly, the number stood at 11 in 2016, 21 in 2015 and 11 in 2014.

Of the total 32 rape victims in 2017, 22 were small girls and 10 were women. The rape victims in 2017 included 15 were small girls and eight women. A total of 21 rape cases were registered in 2019 in which 13 victims were small girls and eight others were women.

The district also recorded as many as 265 cases of suicide, 90 cases of rape, 85 cases of domestic violence, 17 cases of polygamy, 15 cases of murder, eight cases of human trafficking, three cases of murder after rape and two cases each of racial discrimination, beating and child marriage, according to the INSEC.

In recent days, rape, suicide and murder cases are on rise across the country. Many of such cases are usually covered up either for financial gains or threats to life.
