ICC Women’s T20 WC: Nepal beats China by 5 runs

KATHMANDU, Feb 25: Nepal has defeated China by five runs at its fifth match under the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Region Qualifier held at Terdthai Cricket Ground, Bangkok on Monday.

Nepal secured a win against its opponent team after the latter was restricted to 72 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Despite four runs at hand, China could not reach the target of 78 runs set by Nepal.

Except two China’s cricketers - Zhang Mei and Caiyun Zhou – others could not reach double digit runs. Zhang Mei top-scored with 33 runs including two fours off 39 balls and Caiyun Zhou made 18 runs off 61 balls.

In reply, Nepal’s Sita Rana Magar claimed highest three wickets giving away 19 runs in four overs while Kabita Kunwar grabbed one wicket at the cost of nine runs in three overs, thereby exerting pressure on Nepal.

Earlier, invited to bat first after losing the toss, Nepal had set a 78-run target for China. Kajal Shrestha top-scored with 18 runs including one four off 32 balls, Sita Rana Magar contributed 11 runs off 25 balls while Bindu Rawal made 10 runs off 16 balls.

Han Lili and Wang Meng grabbed two wickets each of Nepal while LI Haoye, L Jie and Wu Juan claimed one wicket each. Nepal will take on Kuwait on February 27 in the final match. 

A total of seven Asian countries - Nepal, the UAE, Malaysia, China Hong Kong and Kuwait along with the organizer Thailand – are participating in the qualifier.  Each team will play six games. 

The team which is atop the score table after playing with each other in the qualifier will be selected for the Global Qualifier. This qualifier would determine the raking of participating countries.
