IlAM, August 15:  Former prime minister and CPN (Unified Socialist) leader Jhalanath Khanal has said that he will contest the upcoming election to the House of Representatives (HoR) from Ilam Constituency 1.

"I have come to the conclusion that I should actively move forward in the next election," Khanal told reporters in his home district of Ilam Monday morning. "When I have to contest elections, I don't look for another electoral constituency, the constituency I am contesting from is Ilam's constituency 1”.

Khanal said that after undergoing surgery last year, the doctor told him that his life has increased by 12-15 years. "It's been almost 60 years since I have been active in politics. If the people still want me to be active, why should I remain silent?" he asked, adding, “Before the surgery last year, I was about to die. After the operation, I got a new lease of life. It is also a bonus life.”

Khanal has been continuously contesting elections from Ilam since 1990. He was defeated by the Nepali Congress candidate in the 1999 election. Since his party CPN (Unified Socialist) is in power now, he is preparing to contest the election from the alliance. "It has been decided to maintain the alliance at the center, accordingly, the election campaign of the entire country will proceed," said Khanal, "The experience of the alliance in the local elections was sweet as honey and bitter as neem, but that experience is now a part of the past. Nothing can be done except to learn from it”.

After not being satisfied with the results of the local elections, Khanal made a public statement that the Nepali Congress, which is in alliance in Suryodaya Municipality and Maijogmai Rural Municipality of Ilam, did not vote for its candidates. The Congress leaders of that municipality and district level expressed their anger toward Khanal through social media regarding his expression.
