KATHMANDU, July 7: Former king Gyanendra Shah has expressed his concerns over the present political situation in the country on Thursday.

Speaking to media persons at a press meet called to mark his 65th birthday at his residence Nirmal Niwas, Maharajgunj in the capital, the former king said, “I did not give up the throne to see this situation,” and described the present political developments as being unfortunate. [break]

When approached for his opinion on the slow-paced constitution writing process, Shah refused to comment. “I have put everything on that paper,” he said, referring to the press release he issued on the occasion.

In his press statement, Shah has expressed his optimism about completion of the peace process and constitution writing at the earliest. “It’s not good to see things in dim light,” he said succinctly.

Earlier in the day, three cadres of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP-N), the only political outfit in the Constituent Assembly publicly lobbying for restoration of monarchy, were arrested from Maharajgunj.

They were arrested while planning to take out a procession to mark Shah’s birthday. DSP Jagadish Pokharel of the Metropolitan Police Circle, Maharajgunj, informed that the RPP-N cadres were held for chanting "improper" slogans.
