MYAGDI, Nov 12: There are two live horses near a pile of dead horses and hinnies at the base camp of Dhaulagiri mountain.

When the climbers and tourists reached the base camp with their supplies on October 3, at least 45 horses that went with them were buried by snow and killed. The rescue of the horse stranded in the base camp has not been done yet even 38 days after the tragic incident.

Tourism entrepreneur Indra Singh Sherchan said the horses would go to the surrounding areas in search of food and eat dead horse carcasses to satisfy their hunger. "The horses are likely to die due to lack of food and extreme cold. It is not possible to bring those who are still alive on foot," said Sherchan.

Sherchan said that efforts were made to bring the horse but it was not immediately possible as the road was covered with snow. He said that even if the starving horses are given food and leftovers by climbers and porters, it was not enough for them.

The 17 hinnies taken by Thamserku Trekking Company to transport goods in 8,167m high Daulagiri Mountain in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-4 of Myagdi and 28 hinnies, who went to pick up Shangrila Trekking Company's goods, died as a result of avalanche.

On the day of Dashain, porters and tourists who were stranded due to heavy snowfall were rescued. However, the remaining horses that were stranded died and only two of them are alive now.

The trekking company has not shown any interest in rescuing the stranded horses. As the country’s major elections are just eight days away, other stakeholders are also not interested in rescuing the horses that are on the verge of death.
