KATHMANDU, June 18: Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN), together with different institutions, is organizing Hong Kong-Nepal Trade Fair 2017 in Hong Kong from June 24.

“Handicraft products like metal statues, silver jewelry, and dhaka and pashmina products will be put on display at the fair,” Dharma Raj Shakya, president of FHAN, said. “Altogether there will be 18 stalls at the fair of which 15 will feature Nepali handicraft products and remaining three will showcase herbs and other Nepali products.”

Shakya further added that handicraft sector was one of the major foreign exchange earners for the country. “Also, it has contributed in poverty alleviation by creating employment opportunities,” he said, adding that the fair will also strengthen Nepal' cultural and business ties with Hong Kong.

Similarly, Bimal Nepal, deputy executive director of Trade and Export Promotion Centre (TEPC), said that the government will help to organize similar fairs in other parts of the world after assessing the outcomes of this fair.

According to the organizers, the fair will showcase Nepal's art and culture, as well as Hong Kong Summer Fashion Show.

“Hong Kong is recognized as world over as a hub of traders as well as tourists. The fair will help in marketing and promotion of our handicraft and other products. Though we are organizing the fair the first time, the experience will open the door for us to organize similar events more frequently,” Bheshmani Shrestha, the secretary at Hong Kong-Nepalese Business Association, said.

The fair will be held at Hong Kong Culture Centre at Kowloon on June 24 and 25. The fair will be followed by a 'charity dinner' to support Mahabir Pun's campaign to establish National Innovation Center.

The fair is being jointly organized by Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal, Consulate General of Nepal for Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR, and Hong Kong-Nepalese Business Association to promote Nepal art, culture and tourism in Hong Kong. The event is supported by Nepal Airlines Corporation, Trade and Export Promotion Centre, and Investment Board Nepal and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).
