KATHMANDU, Oct 1: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak said that while the government made timely efforts to rescue flood-affected individuals in Lalitpur, successful rescue operations were not possible due to adverse weather conditions.
During a meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives on Tuesday, the minister acknowledged the challenges faced during the rescue efforts. He noted that citizens stranded on tin roofs during the severe flooding were swept away before help could arrive.

In response to criticism from MPs regarding the delayed rescues, Lekhak emphasized that both the Armed Police Force and Nepal Police had deployed to the area, but conditions made it difficult to carry out effective rescue operations. "The government has not neglected the situation; we have made every attempt possible. Although the police were dispatched and helicopter rescues were considered, weather conditions impeded our efforts. Unfortunately, despite these attempts, some individuals were lost, with three rescued and two still missing," he said.
The minister assured that the Lalitpur district would provide compensation of Rs 200,000 to the families of the deceased, as announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs. He added that necessary funds have been allocated to district management committees for relief efforts, and any additional funding requirements would be addressed promptly.
“We are currently focused on search, rescue, relief, and medical treatment for the injured. Following assessments of the extensive damages, we will initiate reconstruction efforts and other necessary actions,” Lekhak said.
