KATHMANDU, May 5: Weather across the country including the mountain region has shown signs of returning to normal as Cyclone Fani weakened after crossing the coastal area of Calcutta, India. 

The Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) informed that the cyclone has weakened after crossing Calcutta. The forecasting division said the weather will improve gradually from Saturday night. 
“Cyclone is getting weaker and weather will improve from Saturday night,” MFD stated in its regular weather bulletin. 

It said light to moderate rain is likely to occur at some places of the eastern region with thundershowers at a few places. It has ruled out the possibility of any major rainfall and snow. 

Climbers and Sherpas, who had descended to Everest Base Camp on Friday, said the sun was out again in the Everest region  Sunday afternoon. Hundreds of climbers, Sherpas, support staff and government liaison officers had reached the Everest region and neighboring mountains. 

“The sun is shining at Everest Base Camp again. All is well and we are all safe and sound here,” wrote Seven Summit Treks on its  Facebook page. 

On Saturday, little snowfall was reported around Everest.  

Scores of tents set up at the higher camps were ripped up on Friday by high winds as Cyclone Fani was passing through coastal India. Worried over the cyclone, the Ministry of Home Affairs had banned helicopter flights to the mountains and expedition companies were told to move their climbers and support staff to safer locations. 

Home Ministry officials said they are considering lifting the helicopter ban from Sunday afternoon. “Before that we will consult the Met office,” said Bed Khanal, an official at the ministry.
