KATHMANDU, July 3: In a bid to promote Nepal's tourism in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck the country on April 25 last year, hiking (a long walk) is being organized in Hong Kong.

The 13 km distance walking will be held on coming July 24 with the theme of 'Hike for Nepal'.

Miteri Society Hong Kong which is organizing the event shared this information at a press meet in Hong Kong on Friday.

Noted mountaineer Phurba Tenjing Sherpa who has successfully scaled the Mt Everest, world's tallest peak, for the tenth times will be joining this unique event which aims to promote the country's tourism affected by the disaster.

The event to be held under the 'We Will Rise Campaign', a motivational campaign launched at the initiatives of Nepalis residing in Hong Kong after the quake will be held on coming July 24.

Phurba has two world records in mountaineering including the most successful ascent to the Mt Everest at the youngest age. Recently, he reached atop the world's tallest peak with the flag of the 'We Will Rise Campaign'.

On the sidelines of event, Sherpa will have an interaction with foreign mountaineers on the success stories of mountain climbing, its problems and challenges.

The long walk will originate from Central Hong Kong, the business zone of international town Hong Kong and will conclude at Repulse Bay by going through Wan Chai Gap and Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park.

Foreign mountaineers including locals are joining the Nepalis in hiking, according to Society Chair Tulasi Gurung.

This will be the biggest international event meant for promoting tourism in the aftermath of the quake, the organizers hope, adding that it would be a great support to jack up tourism activities when government bodies including the Nepal Tourism Board have been making efforts to promote the worst hit sector. Moreover, it will help impart knowledge about mountaineering in Nepal to the Hong Kong people.

Besides, Thaneshwor Guragai who has Guinness Records in 12 different genres is to participate in the hiking and he is expected to try to set one more world in Hong Kong too.

'We Will Rise Campaign' is becoming global as it has the support of Nepali sisters and brothers residing worldwide, people associated with this said. RSS
