KATHMANDU, March 23: In the case of acid survivor Aarti Sah, the Janakpur High Court has upheld the district court's decision. The high court has upheld the decision of the district court that Sanjiv Shah of Sabaila Municipality-6 Makhanaha of Dhanusha should be imprisoned for 10 and a half years and pay Rs 600,000 in compensation to his wife Aarti for attacking her with acid.

On Wednesday, a division bench of High Court Janakpur Judge Dalkumar Khadka and Sagar Bista upheld the decision of the district court. Advocate Rinku Kumari Yadav and Achyutam Archaya argued on behalf of the plaintiff at Bench No. 4 of the High Court. Advocate Yadav said that they have been arguing on behalf of acid victim Aarti for free right from the district court.

Aarti's brother Sanjay Kumar Sah filed a case in the district court, making Nagendra Sah, the shopkeeper from whom Sanjiv bought the acid, also a defendant. But after the district court acquitted Nagendra, Sanjay approached the high court against the district court's decision.  

Eight years ago, 28-year-old Sanjiv Shah and Aarti Shah of Sabaila Municipality-6 got married. After a year and a half, Aarti gave birth to a daughter. Husband Sanjiv started torturing her for not bringing dowry and giving birth to a daughter. The tension between both of them was increasing. After her mother-in-law did not support her, Aarti started living in her parents home in Janakpurdham Sub-metropolitan City-23, Rupaitha.

After their dispute was not resolved, both of them agreed on a divorce at the district police office. Both were ready to go to the court through the district police and get a divorce. But before the divorce, Sanjeev reached Aarti’s maternal home on 14th November 2020 and splashed acid on Aarti's face. Not only Aarti but also her daughter's hand and part of her head got burnt in the acid attack.
