KATHMANDU, Jan 6: A hearing was held at the Supreme Court on Friday about the citizenship and passport dispute of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane.

The constitutional bench of SC comprising Acting Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki and Justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, Dr Anand Mohan Bhattarai, Anil Kumar Sinha and Prakashman Singh Raut heard the case against him. So far, the hearing of the case filed by advocate Raviraj Basaula has been completed, while the hearing on the case filed by Yuvraj Poudel is ongoing, according to the Supreme Court

As these cases are being heard, the constitutional bench has decided not to hear other cases today.

Advocates Raviraj Basaula, Yuvraj Poudel and others filed a writ petition questioning the election of Lamichhane, who is also the chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, to the House of Representatives.

The petitioners have demanded the cancellation of the position of Home Minister Lamichhane, stating that he established a political party, contested the House of Representatives election and became a member of parliament without acquiring the Nepali citizenship.

The police were investigating him on the allegation of creating a Nepali passport without renouncing his American citizenship and submitting false information. But he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister on December 26.
