KATHMANDU, April 28: Guardians of students at St Xavier´s School, Jawalakhel, on Tuesday thwarted an attempt by the Institutional School Teachers´ Union (ISTU) to padlock the school.

A group of ISTU teachers numbering about 100 had reached Jawalakhel at about 4:30 pm to padlock the school, alleging that the school management sacked three teachers from the school. Agitating teachers affiliated to ISTU and parents gathered at the school main gate as the former tried to padlock the gate. The situation was tense for a while.

The teachers´ body has threatened to shut down the school indefinitely unless the sacked teachers are reinstated. However, ISTU president Hom Kumar Thapa alleged that the school management had deployed non-guardians to thwart their attempt. Thapa said that one of their colleagues, Sudhir Jha, was manhandled by them.

The school authorities could not be contacted for their comment. Police intervention prevented Jha from getting hurt. Protesting the incident, ISTU has announced a shutdown of all schools in Lalitpur district on Wednesday.
