KATHMANDU,
Some lawmakers on Monday urged the government to ban beauty pageants in the country.
No limitation to beauty
Speaking at a meeting of the Women and Social Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives on Monday, Amrita Thapa Magar, a lawmaker and CPN (Maoist Center)’s central member, said that the state would not lose anything even if such events are banned.
On Friday and Saturday, social activists staged protests near Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's residence, Baluwatar, and Maitighar in the cpaital, against sexual abuse issues and demanded justice after a series of 20 videos was released on the internet in which a girl who participated in a beauty pageant in 2014 was abused by the pageant organizer.
Later, the parliamentary committee also directed the government to maintain a clear policy as well as to conduct detailed discussion before organizing any kind of beauty pageants, modeling-related competitions and entertainment-based competitive programs based on various categories like age, caste and qualifications.
The lawmakers also made an appeal to the governmen to reconsider the provision of statute of limitations of one year for rape cases.
