Govt to provide relief to those whose whereabouts are unknown even after 10-days of monsoon induced disaster

KATHMANDU, Sept 30: The Disaster Management Executive Committee has decided to provide a relief amount to the families of those who went missing in monsoon-induced disasters. A meeting of the committee held at Singha Durbar on Monday took the decision.

Rishiram Tiwari, joint secretary and home ministry spokesperson, said that the meeting has decided to provide the relief amount to the families of the missing persons as the same as the deceased, if the missing persons are not found within 10 days. Tiwari said that the committee has decided to accelerate the search operation, rescue and relief operations.

The committee paid tributes to all those who have lost their lives in the monsoon-induced disasters and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured and extended condolences to the families affected. It has also decided to continue the search and rescue operations in the disaster-affected areas affected by the heavy rains for the past three days and immediately initiate the relief distribution process for the weather-disaster victims through the one-by-one system.

It has been decided to immediately provide the first installment of the temporary housing grant for the disaster affected people within seven days for the families who lost their homes to the monsoon disasters, as per the norms related to Temporary Housing Construction Subsidy Procedure 2081 BS. Spokesperson Tiwari also said that the amount will be made available from the District Disaster Management Committee.

Similarly, the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has decided to expedite the operation of blocked road sections to ensure that stranded passengers on the highways can reach their destinations as soon as possible.

The ministry has also decided to provide temporary housing grants, the construction of infrastructure such as roads, drinking water and other infrastructures in the current emergency situation caused by floods and landslides, to mobilize humanitarian aid in accordance with Section 8 of the Disaster Risks Reduction and Management Act, 2074 for the search, rescue, relief and rehabilitation of disaster victims.

According to the decision of the relevant cluster lead from the United Nations bodies in Nepal, the Red Cross and other partner organizations, assistance will be mobilized based on needs.

The Ministry of Health and Population will conduct awareness programs, health camps, and other initiatives in potential and suitable locations to prevent the spread of epidemic diseases, as an epidemic can spread after such disasters.

The relevant ministry has also decided to proceed with the reconstruction of roads, public buildings, water supply, electricity, schools and health institutions that have been damaged due to monsoon induced disasters in several places of the country.

Tiwari said that a task force has been formed regarding the damage and the task force has been given a 15-day deadline to collect all the relevant details of the damage.
