Govt to build Upper Arun project on its own

KATHMANDU, Sept 23: Friday’s cabinet meeting has decided that the government will build Upper Arun hydroelectric project on its own. 

Nepal Electricity Authority will institute a company named Upper Arun Hydroelectric Company Limited to build the project, informed Gokul Baskota, spokesperson of the government of Nepal. 

The project of 335 MW will be an attractive peaking run-of-the-river type, with an estimated cost of $100 billion. The project is located about 30 kilometers north from the dam site of Arun III, which is being built by an Indian company, Satluj Jal Vidhyut Nigam Ltd, in Sankhuwasabha district in eastern Nepal. The project area lies about 15 kilometers south of Nepal-China border.
