KATHMANDU, Feb 4: The government has permitted 10 mountaineering expedition teams to climb mountains this winter season that lasts till February end.

The Department of Tourism (DoT) has issued the climbing permits to 45 individuals of the expeditions for this season as of Wednesday. Of them, three are the Nepali mountaineering expeditions that consist of 18 climbers.

A total of seven female climbers are participating in 10 expeditions. The government has collected revenue of Rs 896,005 in royalty through issuing the permits.  

According to the DoT, the mountaineering expedition teams mainly look to climb low-altitude peaks during this winter. Among those receiving the government permits, two teams are permitted to climb each of Mt Manaslu with an altitude of 8,163 meter and the 6,814-meter high Amadablam.

Mt Luza Peak (5,726 m), Mt Kyungya Ri 2 (6,506 m), Mt Surma Sarovar (6,523 m), Mt Rokapi (5,467 m), Mt Thapa Peak (6,012 m) and Chukyima GO (6,258 m) are among the Nepali mountain peaks that the different expedition team members seek to scale during this winter season.

Of late, mountain climbing is slowly peeking up providing some respite to the tourism entrepreneurs in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. Citing risks of further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government on March 14 cancelled permits to all spring mountaineering expeditions including the Everest ascents. It was only since September that the DoT started giving permission to the mountaineers aspiring to scale Nepali mountain peaks.
