KATHMANDU, April 14:  Prime Minister K P Oli has claimed that the government was able to make extraordinary achievements in the past one year despite adverse situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his address to the nation through television on the occasion of Nepali New Year 2078 BS on Wednesday, Prime Minister Oli said that his government was able to raise hope among people at a time when there was a huge pessimism among people.  "We have not wasted time despite adversities," he said.

While highlighting various achievements made by the government in the past one year, Prime Minister Oli claimed that the government was able to maintain a rapid pace of development by building five kilometers of blacktopped road each day and  12 houses a day on an average. He also announced increasing the elderly allowances from the new fiscal year.

Prime Minister Oli said that the government's move to introduce a social security scheme was part of its achievement. He said that over 6 million people have already become part of this scheme.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Oli came down heavily against House Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota for not presenting a bill related to Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in the parliament for its ratification. He argued that the Speaker does not have rights to put on hold the Bill that is tabled by the government in the parliament.

"The MCC agreement was reached when there was a coalition government of Nepali Congress and the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center). We have tabled the Bill in the parliament. We have demanded that the Bill be presented in the parliament for decision," he said. "No one has rights constitutionally to stop presenting the bill tabled by the government in the parliament for its decision. The Bill must be presented in the parliament."
