Govt increases fines for overcrowded public vehicles

KATHMANDU, May 28: The amount of fine for small micro-buses and three-wheelers carrying passengers more than their capacity has been raised in Kathmandu Valley. 

The Ministry of Home Affairs had on May 18 directed the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division to be stringent in enforcement of traffic rules and reducing the traffic accidents. 

The amount of fine charged from vehicles carrying passengers more than the designated capacity has been increased to Rs 1,000. Before this, the fine amount was Rs 500 for this offence. The fine amount has been raised effective from May 26. 

Division chief Senior Superintendent of Police Basanta Pant said that 649 micro-buses and three-wheelers have faced police action from May 18 till date. 

"We have taken action against the micro-buses and auto rickshaws having seating capacity of less than 18 seats and carrying more passengers than their capacity," he said. The Division has also taken action against 155 microbuses for the same offence. 

This rule is still not come into effect in the case of big public vehicles. RSS
