KATHMANDU, Jan 6: The government has increased public transportation fares, effective from Monday, January 6. The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) confirmed that public transport fares have been increased by 3.30 percent, while freight vehicle fares have been adjusted as follows: a 0.81 percent increase for vehicles operating on hill districts and a 0.05 percent increase for vehicles in the Terai.
The new fares also include adjustments of fares of public transport vehicles operating between multiple provinces. Prior to this, the DoTM had adjusted the fares on August 16, 2023. Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal, approved the fare hike on December 26, 2024 while the decision was implemented on January 6.
Reluctance to implement adjusted transport fares
The fare hike is based on a study by the DoTM, which considered the rising costs of key inputs like workers’ wages, fuel, tires, interest, operating expenses, depreciation, and profits.
