KATHMANDU, Jan 3: The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD), Department of Health Services under the Ministry of Health and Population has issued a seven-point directive to health institutions across the country to prepare against the possible spread of the omicron variant of COVID-19.

The EDCD Director Dr Krishna Prasad Poudel said the health directorates in all seven provinces and district health offices in all 77 districts and 753 local levels across the country have been directed to prepare against the imminent threat of COVID-19. Since the new variant of the COVID-19 is highly transmissible, the nature of the lately detected variant demands us to be more attentive and proactive to its prevention, said Dr Poudel

So far, three cases of omicron variant have been detected in Nepal.

The EDCD has urged the public not to organize or join any kind of gathering and take all preventive measures including regular use of masks and handwashing with soap and water against the virus.

Similarly, the health bodies concerned have been directed to identify vulnerable zones, ensure the COVID-test through antigen screening and proper management of infected persons and conduct contact tracing with necessary arrangements of quarantine and test facilities.

The EDCD directive also seeks the COVID-19 test of people on arrival along the border areas and their appropriate management and identification of any target group missing from COVID-19 inoculation campaign. The EDCD has also called for encouraging vaccination against COVID-19 among members of the community and ensuring follow-up and monitoring of people in-home quarantine.
