Govt committed to ensuring security for polls: Nidhi

KATHMANDU, April 21: Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi has informed the parliament that the government will fully ensure security for the May 14 local polls.

Addressing the House meeting on Thursday, Minister Nidhi said that the government is committed to ensuring all security arrangement for the polls. 

“The government has deployed security forces with proper polls security plans. I want to express commitment on behalf of the government for the local polls,” said Nidhi. 

He further informed that the government has classified various districts as normal, sensitive and highly sensitive areas for the election security management. The minister further said that government has expedited all preparations for the local polls in coordination with the Election Commission. 

“However, a broader political consensus is necessary for holding the local polls. The government has been expecting participation of all political parties in the polls,” added Nidhi. 
Nidhi also informed the House about an incident of alleged vandalism by cadres of the agitating Madhes-based parties at CPN-UML lawmaker Satya Narayan Mandal’s house in Saptari. They also reportedly misbehaved with his family members. Nidhi said that although the police foiled cadres of the Madhesi parties trying to hoist a black flag at his house, no reports of misbehavior was reported.  Parliament Speaker Onsari Gharti had ruled the government to answer to the House about the incident after Mandal raised the issue in the previous House meeting.
