KATHMANDU, April 15: The government has decided to provide e-passes for vehicles and personal use from Tuesday.

After the government had placed a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), only vehicles involved in essential services were provided passes for transportation but for limited period.

Sohan Shrestha, managing director of Genexx Private Limited, had come up with the idea of the e-pass and has collaborated with the government to provide this service without any cost.

The District Administration Offices of 77 districts have started providing the service of e-pass to the people from Tuesday. People involved in the essential service sector and those with valid reasons such as medical and other emergencies can apply for the e-pass.

“As we all are in the situation of pandemic, I saw people struggling to get passes for transportation, so we have come up with the idea of e-pass and the government was very supportive of our idea,” said Shrestha, “District Administration Office, Kathmandu itself has received over 6,000 applications for e-pass, which clearly shows that this technology was much needed.”

People can apply for e-pass from epass.moha.gov.np and could choose options for individual or vehicles. The applicants have to fill up their personal information, phone number, id number, dates, service category, and information of the vehicle with supporting documents and choose the area and the district they want to access with the pass. Applicants will require valid reasons to receive the digital pass.

The District Administration Office will choose the applicants on the basis of their valid reasons and supporting documents. The District Administration Office will send an SMS if the applicant is selected and if not then the reason for rejection will be provided. Those who are selected will get a six digit code.

People who are involved in essential service sectors like health, water supply, gas, milk, food, internet or require hospital visits for check-up, and funerals can apply for the e-pass.

“This service will play an effective role for the people to get the digital pass without crowding the district administration office and getting their work done by their own smart phone which is free of cost along with maintaining social distancing,” said Shrestha, “People need to provide the six digit code to the police personnel and they will check the digit from their system and they will allow movement for pass holders.”

As per Shrestha, this system will not only be limited during the lockdown but it will also be applicable during curfews and elections.
