KATHMANDU, April 21: Google, the global tech giant, has officially registered with Nepal's tax system. It is the first major company to do so after the Nepal government implemented a new law to regulate and tax international internet-based companies.

Raju Prasad Pyakurel, the spokesperson for the Inland Revenue Department, says from now onwards, the government will charge a two percent tax on every transaction happening on any of the Google platforms.

The government has introduced a new provision in the budget for the current fiscal year, allowing for the registration of internet-based platforms where financial transactions occur. This marks the first time such registration has been included in the budget plan. Additionally, a digital service tax has been introduced as part of the provision.

The government hopes Google’s move will put pressure on other global tech giants such as Facebook to register with Nepal’s tax system.
