Gold Jalhari reinstalled at Pashupatinath Temple

KATHMANDU, June 29: The gold Jalhari has been reinstalled in the sanctum sanctorum of the Pashupatinath temple. It took 11 hours to reinstall the gold jalhari back into the temple.


Two years after receiving a complaint about the quantity of gold being tampered with, a team of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) reached Pashupati on Sunday to measure the weight of the gold Jalhari.


The gold Jalhari, which was removed at 2 AM on Monday, was restored from 6 PM on Wednesday.

Devotees were barred from entering the temple from noon on Wednesday to place the gold Jalhari. Security personnel were deployed at the temple. Apart from the regular aarti, there was no other worship at the Pashupatinath Temple.


Earlier, the team from the CIAA included representatives from the Federation of Gold and Silver Dealers’ Associations, Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, as well as the Department of Mines and Geology had gone to the temple to measure the weight of the gold jalhari.


According to the CIAA, the expected weight should have been 107.76 kg, but upon weighing, it came out to be only 107.4687 kg.


In regard to the installation of the gold Jalhari, which adorns the inner sanctum sanctorum of the Pashupatinath Temple, a total of 103.773 kg of gold, valued at Rs 800.11 million, was procured from the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB).
