A complete eye makeup guide for girls who wear spectacles

Most women who wear glasses tend to neglect their eye makeup. After all, who cares about meticulously applied eye liner that’s hidden behind a huge pair of glasses, right? But the truth is, like any other makeup, there is a trick to making your eyes look beautiful even while having glasses on.

So, we at The Week spoke to Anjali Gurung, Kathmandu based freelance makeup artist, who gave some tips to help you make your eyes stand out even behind bulky frames. She also taught us the correct way of applying makeup while wearing powered lenses.

Brighten up

The first thing to keep in mind while applying makeup if you wear glasses is to lighten your skin tone in certain areas. “What happens with eye glasses is that they can cast shadows around the eyes under certain lighting. So the best way to go about it is to use a concealer or a light foundation under your eyes and on the tip of your nose,” says Gurung.

Another important step is to contour your face completely by darkening either side of your forehead, sides of your nose, bronzing your cheek bones and sharpening your jaw line. Contouring will help you get the fresher look and will highlight your eyes in the process.

A thin layer of foundation

Applying a thin layer of foundation is essential for girls who wear glasses. The bridge of your nose and your cheeks is where your spectacles rest. So it is imperative to wear a thin layer of moisturizer and foundation in order to avoid foundation coming off on your glasses.

The best way to remove extra product from your face is to dampen a makeup sponge and a beauty blender and roll it slightly over your face to remove the extra product. And lastly, put on some setting powder to keep your glasses from sticking to your foundation and removing it.

Beauty brows

The best way to make your brows look attractive even while wearing glasses is to make sure that they are shaped and styled according to your frame. If you plan to wear a big and bold frame, then it is best to have thin and well shaped brows. On the other hand, full, dark and well defined brows go well with thin frames.

Shimmering eyelids

If you want your eyes to pop and shine, it is best to apply some shimmer on your eyelids. This simple technique will make your eyes look a lot bigger and appealing with minimal effort. Just make sure the glitter doesn’t get in your frames and make you seem sloppily put together.

Eye liner

It is best to apply eye liner that is lighter than the frame. This is an important step to ensure that the eyeliner is visible and does not get lost due to the frame. The trick to getting a bold eye look is to ensure that your eye liner is as thick as your frame. This will make sure that your glasses are not overshadowing your eye makeup. However, you can also go for a simple eye liner if you do not want a bold look.

Nude shadows

A nude palate is perfect for applying eye shadows. For girls who wear glasses, the lighter the color the better it is and one can never go wrong with neutrals. However, that does not mean women with glasses cannot carry off bold or smoky shadows. You just have to know what suits you and what you are comfortable with. Also, smudging your eyeliner slightly can make your eyes stand out.

Perfect lashes

Before you apply mascara, make sure you use an eyelash curler to prevent your lashes from hitting your glasses. You can also apply heavy mascara on the roots of your lashes but not on the tips. “While applying your first coat, focus on your roots as well as the tips and for the second coat just focus on your roots,” says Gurung. This will prevent your lashes from hitting your glasses and messing it up.

Beautiful lips

If you want the main attraction of your face to be your eyes, then wear lipsticks of neutral and light shades. However, you can also complement your bold eye glasses with bold lipsticks. This will balance your face and make your makeup look extremely stylish.

Makeup with contact lenses

Women who wear glasses on a regular basis tend to have dark circles under their eyes. The best best way to hide this is to first apply a tinted moisturizer that will remove the redness caused by the glasses on your nose and help in hiding your dark circles to some extent.

The next step is to apply a concealer that is a shade lighter than your skin tone. You can play with your eye makeup by applying some eye shadow in a popping color. Also, applying highlighter on your cheek bones, jawline, tip of your nose and center of the forehead will help in considerably brightening up your face.
