WiFi at Dalit Community
KHOTANG, Dec 17: Residents of Solma of Majhuwagadi municipality-2, Khotang have something new: internet access. The Dalit community now will be connected with their loved ones and the world with a 1 Mbps internet.
During Deusi-Bhilo, the community had collected 25,000 rupees, which has been used to bring internet in the community, Gangabahadur Bishwokarma, member of Ajambari Tole Development Committee which was responsible to bring internet in the community.
Majority of the residents have opted for foreign employment from the community. As cellular data was expensive, the committee decided to install WiFI, BK said. “The WiFi will not only help to connect with loved ones through affordable means, it will also help them to be aware on national, international news and information,” BK said.
With the internet in place, some families have even started to utilize the facility to educate their children while increasing the use of social media in the community.
The WorldLink internet is benefiting 12 families to communicate with affordability at 18,000 rupees per year. Apart from brining internet in the community, the Tole Development Committee has also been aiming to be a model village. “To start with, we are working to install street lamps and make the streets wider to accommodate motorbike travel.” BK said.
