KATHMANDU, May 15: Former king Gyanendra Shah left Jhapa for Kathmandu on Friday morning after the District Administration Office, Jhapa, issued him a new vehicle pass.

Chief District Officer of Jhapa, Udaya Rana told reporters in Damak that the former king, queen and three others were provided vehicle passes to facilitate their travel to Kathmandu.

Shah had filed an online application for the vehicle permit. However, the local administration refused to issue the vehicle pass referring to the government's decision to invalidate the vehicle passes for the people's inter-district movement.

Amid public outcry on social media, the local administration provided the vehicle permit for the former king on Friday morning as per the instruction of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Shah was stuck in Jhapa for the nearly past two months after the government enforced a lockdown to stop the coronavirus spread. He was staying at his house at Himalaya Tea Garden in Damak even before the enforcement of the lockdown.

Recently, the government scrapped the inter-district vehicle passes issued earlier owing to the possible spread of the coronavirus disease.
