KATHMANDU, May 28: Days after the Supreme Court overturned its own decision to reduce his prison term, police have arrested former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Armed Police Force (APF) Ranjan Koirala.

Despite being arrested on Friday, Koirala, who was convicted for the murder of his wife, will be sent to jail on Monday. He will be sent to jail for the rest of his imprisonment on Monday after the final decision of SC reaches them. Until then, Koirala will be kept in custody at Metropolitan Police Circle, Durbar Marg. After his arrest, he was taken to Bir Hospital for medical examination.

Earlier, Koirala served jail terms in Dilli Bazaar Jail for eight and a half years. Earlier, Kathmandu District Court had sentenced him to life imprisonment and the High Court had also upheld the district court's decision.

Koirala had knocked at the door of SC after his appeal was suspended by both district and high court. The suspended Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher JBR and Justice Tej Bahadur KC reversed the verdict of the earlier bench granting him a discount of remaining 11 years and six months imprisonment.

However, the decision to release Koirala, who murdered his wife, was met with widespread criticisms. The Office of the Attorney General had requested for a review of the verdict on July 26.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Deepak Kumar Karki and Justices Tanka Bahadur Moktan and Dr Kumar Chudal on Wednesday issued the verdict upholding the decision of District Court Kathmandu and Patan High Court on the murder case sentenceing him to 20-year jail term for the crime he committed.
