BIRATNAGAR, July 22: The biggest worry for Kishandevi Rishidev of Bakhari, Biratnagar-16, is how to get milk to feed her 1-year-old son Anuj.

Kishandevi, whose house was inundated by Tuesday night´s flood, implores to every person who arrives with relief supplies to provide her some milk. [break]

“I have not eaten anything for two days so there is no breast milk left,” said Kishandevi who is taking shelter in a displaced camp at Bakhari Lower Secondary School. “He cries the whole day due to hunger.”

Kishandevi urged people from Satya Sai Ram, Sub-Metropolis officials and Red Cross people, who arrived with relief supplies on Thursday, to arrange some milk for her son.

The relief supplies that have reached the displaced comprise beaten rice, onion, salt and chilly, among other things. But there is no milk. Those arriving with relief supplies have assured Kishandevi´s husband Arjun that milk will arrive soon.

To keep his son from going hungry, Arjun has been borrowing money to buy milk at a nearby tea shop, where he pays Rs 12 per cup of milk.

5,000 displaced

According to a police estimate, nearly 5,000 people have been displaced in Morang by floods caused by incessant rainfall since Tuesday.

The swollen Kaseliya River has displaced 648 people of 116 households from Bakhari village, including seven members of the Rishidev family. All of them are taking shelter at the Bakhari Lower Secondary School.

But the school´s toilet is locked so those taking shelter are answering nature´s call around the school premises, leading to the risk of disease spread, according to Narendra Sahani, a local.

According to officials of Biratnagar Sub-Metropolis, some 66 families have returned to Bakhari village after water level receded.

Situation of the displaced taking shelter at Gayatri Sanskrit Secondary School after being displaced by Singhiya River is pitiable. “We got shelter, but there is neither food, nor clothes,” said Anil Mahato. “It is hard to live on beaten rice,” he added.

The Singhiya River has displaced over a 1,000 people of 500 households from Ward No 1, 2 and 11.

The District Police Office said floods have inundated 71 houses. One woman has died in the district.

“We are still receiving information, but assume that 5,000 people have been displaced so far,” said DSP Rewati Dhakal. “We have been informed that the displaced have started going back to the village after it stopped raining.”

Meanwhile, the Chisang River that flows through Letang swept a woman while she was crossing it. The woman has been identified as 31-year-old Meena.
