Five arrested for defrauding Rs 3 million by selling fake gold Buddha statue

KATHMANDU, July 1: The police have arrested a group of five people for allegedly selling a fake gold Buddha statue.


Dinesh Neupane from Kageshwari-Manohara filed a complaint that Kalakar Das, originally from Kendrapada, Odisha, India, deceived Neupane by showing a fake golden statue and swindled Rs 3 million in cash. The 40-year-old Das was residing in Kamalpokhari, Kathmandu.

After the complaint was filed, a joint police team from the District Police Office, Kathmandu, and the Kadaghari Police Post arrested Das along with four others from various locations in Kathmandu.


Those arrested include 64-year-old Chhetra Bahadur Shahi from Lalitpur, 38-year-old Deepak Thapa from Dallu, 35-year-old Basanta Chaudhary from Lazimpat, and 55-year-old Rabin Maharjan, along with Das.


A fake gold Buddha statue and Rs 1.4 million were found in their possession.
