NEPALGUNJ, Sept 15: Nepali Congress (NC), Banke district chapter, has filed an FIR against 10 ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) cadres after the district president of the main opposition party was thrashed while attending a public function in the district.

On Thursday, NCP cadres barged into a venue of the NC’s awareness campaign in Banke district and thrashed NC members. During the attack, several people including NC’s Banke President Kiran Koirala sustained serious injuries. Koirala’s left hand has fractured.

Injured district party chief Koirala’s son, Sudhanshu, has filed the case against NCP cadres at the Banke District Police on charge of attempted murder.

The case has been filed against Suman Malla, Nirmal Khatri, Lok Bahadur Shahi, Roshan Singh Thakuri, Dip Bahadur Rana, Mum Bahadur Oli, Paras Malla, Indra Bahadur Khatri, Lalit Chand and Hemant Thapa. All the accused are locals of Khajura.

According to Superintendent of Police Bir Bahadur Oli, the district police chief, three accused persons — Lok Bahadur Shahi, Nirmal Khatri and Roshan Singh Thakuri — have already been arrested in connection with the attack.

“Other accused are yet to be arrested,” said SP Oli.

NC has expressed its serious concern over the attack against district party president that too while attending a party program.  Around five NCP cadres entered the hall, where NC’s central representative Bidya Prasad Khanal, was addressing the gathering.

NCP cadres had tried to disrupt our program.  But when NC leaders wanted to convince them they had attacked the leaders including president Koirala.

NC’s President Sher Bahadur Deuba met injured Koirala and demanded a fair probe into the attack. He has instructed local police administration to leave no stone unturned to take action against those involved in attacking the district NC chief.

Meanwhile, the NCP has refused its involvement in the attack. “We are seriously concerned as the Congress politicized the personal case,” said NCP’s Banke district chief IP Kharel.
