Mainali has been credited for taking stern action against tax evaders. During his tenure, Mainali enforced the Vehicle and Consignment Tracking System despite facing pressure from the traders who were against the system that largely helped track the tax evasion in the traded goods. He has also contributed to checking the widespread government revenue leakage through the use of fake receipts of the value added tax by the unscrupulous traders.

After former chief of the IRD Binod Bahadur Kunwar was transferred to the Ministry of Social Development in Gandaki Province, the position has remained vacant for over a month.
