Born in 1913, General Rana was the youngest son of Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher Rana and Krishna Kumari Rana. Rana who joined Nepal Army (NA) as a major in 1931 became the Commander-in-Chief in 1960 and retired in 1965, according to a communiqué released by the NA. [break]
Rana was a World War II veteran. He was posted at the Northwest Frontier Province in Rawalpindi of Pakistan as a liaison officer and had also worked at the Burma Front. He was later appointed as the Field Marshal after he retired from the NA in 1965. Besides many national orders, late Rana was decorated with Knight Grand Cross of The Victorian Order (UK), Knight of The British Empire (UK), Legion The Honor - Second Class (France), Order of Merit - Second Class (Germany) and Order of Yugoslav Villayag.
